What is the Mental Health or Substance Abuse Partial Hospitalization Program?

The Winchester Community Mental Health Center, Inc. Mental Health Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment Program (PHP) and Substance Abuse Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment Program (SAPHP) are each intermediate levels of care programs, providing short-term intensive clinical interventions to adult patients who are experiencing an acute onset or exacerbation of symptoms, situational crisis, avoiding hospitalization or making a transition from an inpatient to a community setting. It is believed that with support, an intensive level of clinical structure and therapeutic interventions, individuals can rebound faster from an onset or relapse of symptoms, can shorten crisis periods, can prevent hospitalization/re-hospitalization, shorten the length of inpatient stays, or successfully transition from inpatient settings to the community.

Treatment

Treatment is offered in a comfortable and relaxed setting primarily through group formats, offering clinical interventions/activities such as psychotherapy, cognitive/behavioral therapy, medication education, medication reviews and monitoring, illness education/symptom recognition and management, health and wellness, crisis management, enhancement of coping skills, utilization of community resources, and goal setting. Groups are offered five a week and scheduling is such that it accommodates a broad range of individual needs as services are available Monday through Friday. Adult and geriatric patients take an active role in their treatment by helping develop their goals, participating in the treatment milieu, and developing their dismissal/aftercare plans.

Outcomes

Anticipated and common outcomes include remittance/stabilization of symptoms, increased use of coping and problem-solving skills, and increased awareness of strengths, improved esteem, and return to previous levels of functioning while remaining in one’s community setting.

Referrals

Referrals are accepted from hospitals, physicians, psychologist, psychotherapist, patients, and social service agencies.
